Too Little To Late Essay

1395 words - 6 pages

It is apparent that today's youth is heading towards a downward spiral in many aspects of life. One reason for this is probably that schools are not preparing future adults adequately enough for life outside of school. While school may prepare our children in some areas of life such as teaching commitment by coming to school or doing homework every day, that would only apply to students who take school seriously. During my high school years it was obvious that the vast majority of students did not want to be there, as they either did not show up or ditched school as soon as the bell rang. While there are some students who strive to do well in their studies, I don’t believe it Is because “they” want to do well but rather because their parents force them too. In comparison there are only a small percentage of students who take charge of their education. Students should be taught why it is important that they should show up on time every day. On top of that I also believe that teaching students about the real world during high school is a little too late, because by then a lot of students will have lost interest in why it is important to learn these things. Learning about this should come at any early age like any other school subject. These subjects include assuming new responsibilities, taking care of yourself, dealing with money, and preparing for the future.
Shortly after high school I found myself engulfed in things that weren't problems before, such as providing my own food, money, and transportation to name a few. Many parents feel as though it's time for their baby birds to leave the nest around the age of 18. Unfortunately not all of us are eager or ready to leave our homes so shortly after we graduate. I believe most students would agree that this epoch of our lives is cumbersome and would probably be easier if school had prepared us for this. Especially now with how bad the economy is jobs have become scarce and competitive even for minimum wage jobs. This in turn makes everything even harder for students who haven’t yet experienced the real world and have a tough time getting started. It would have been helpful to know where to go or what to do as soon as I got out of school, and yet 3 years in I still haven’t found a job. On top of the job issue many students either go on to college or begin their life doing other things. In each case you become independent and somewhat alone, there aren’t any teachers or parents telling you what to do it becomes up to you to make something out of yourself. This of course can be a very confusing time for many young adults because you are left to make your own choices, something school hasn’t prepared you for. Of course making your own choices in any category is never an easy thing to do, but now you are left choosing your next path in life and it can be a pretty frightening thing. When I graduated from high school I didn’t know what to do, at that time it would have been helpful to know where to start...
