Toolbox Paper

This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
I was surprised to learn that people can communicate about their communication. This term is called metacommunication and it is something we all do every day. ...view middle of the document...

One concept I greatly enjoyed exploring is the stages of a relationship. I used this concept to help me asses my relationships were at, and also to decide where they needed to go next. Relationships, whether within couples, family, or friends, all move through stages. The things you do and talk about with someone you just met are probably very different in comparison to what you talk about with your friend of fifteen years. This is because each relationship is at a different stage. Creating my Relationship Stages PowerPoint project was fun and allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of the stages that my various relationships are at. After evaluating some of my relationships, I was able to determine if we needed move backwards to the previous stage, or is we needed to remain in our current stage for now instead of progressing to the next one.
Another concept I enjoyed studying was the different love types. Our text described six different love types: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, mania, and agape. After taking the love type quiz, I discovered my love type was a combination of eros and storge. I agreed with the quiz results, but was slightly put off by them. The eros love type is driven by physical attraction and sexuality while the storge love type moves slower and aims to achieve peace within their relationship. I want to change this though. While I mostly agree that I have an eros love type, I do not want my relationship to be focused on physical attractiveness. I instead want to it be focused on the love we have for each other. Therefore, I am very interested in incorporating the other love types into my personal relationship. I admire the agape love type because I want to show more compassion and selflessness towards my partner. I tend to act independently and want to show my partner that I care for him deeply. I completely agree that I also have a storge love type. Peace is a goal that I strive for within most of my relationships.
Within any type of communication, there will be times of conflict. Through our study of the conflict management stages, I have become more logical in the way I handle conflicts. I used to allow my emotions to take control when a conflict arose. After studying these stages, I have been able to resolve conflicts much more effectively and efficiently. I am now able to take the time to determine exactly what the conflict is about, develop possible solutions, implement the chosen solution, and wait an adequate amount of time before determining if the solution is acceptable or not. I believe these stage will be very useful in any future conflicts and will allow me to keep my emotions in check.
Making assumptions is something we all do every day. It is almost second nature to me. Sometimes these assumptions come true because I am so convinced that I know what will happen that I act as if my assumptions have already come true. I now know this is called a self-fulfilling prophecy. I want to work on not making negative...
