With increasing global markets and competitors, organizations are rethinking their methods and strategies towards providing quality goods and services. The purpose of this paper is to define TQM and its impact on globalization; to compare and contrast traditional and quality focused management styles; and to explain how TQM applies to the success of the Walgreens' organization.In research to find a definition of TQM, there was not one common definition; there are many. While the words varied, the definitions were similar. The textbook, Achieving Quality through Continual Improvement, provides a definition published by SEMATECH (semiconductor manufacturing technology). It states, "TQM is a business management methodology that aligns the activities of all employees in an organization with the common focus of customer satisfaction through continuous improvement in the quality of all activities, goods, and services (Burrill & Ledolter, 1999, ch. 2)." This definition explains that TQM is a management methodology or a way to run a business or organization. TQM is not to a temporary fix to increase productivity, but to align lower management with upper management.Wikipedia provides a definition of TQM given by the International Standards Organization (ISO). It states that TQM is a management approach for an organization, centered on quality, based on the participation of all its members, and aiming at the long-term success through customer satisfaction and benefits to all members of the organization and to society (Wikipedia, 2007).The Free Management Library defines TQM as a set of management practices throughout the organization, geared to ensure the organization consistently meets or exceeds customer requirements (Free Management Library [FML], 1997-2007).The American Society for Quality website defines TQM as a management approach to long-term success through customer satisfaction in which all members of an organization participate in improving processes, products, services, and the culture in which they work (American Society of Quality [ASQ], n.d.).All of these definitions for TQM have the same content and focus. They all state that all members of an organization, both employees and management, must work together to achieve customer satisfaction through quality and continuous improvement of goods and services to have long-term success.Globalization has become an important stimulus for organizations to develop effective ways to produce quality goods and services.
