Imagine living in such terror that you, your family, and all of your neighbors would flee from your homes running terrified that the Janjaweed would come for you. The Janjaweed are a group of government-backed Arab men who attack hundreds of villages and murder thousands of people in Darfur. In the course of the attacks, the Janjaweed indicate their desire to remove the black Africans from Darfur and replace them with Arab Africans allied with the Kartoum Government (Darfur and Sudan). In order to accurately understand the tragedy in Sudan one must understand the specifics of the people and the region.
On September 9, 2004, the United States Secretary of State declared that what was occurring in Darfur was genocide (Darfur and Sudan). The Sudanese government unleashed Arab militias known as the Janjaweed who systematically destroy Darfurians by burning villages, looting economic resources, polluting water sources, and murdering, raping, and torturing civilians (Darfur Genocide). The Sudanese government disputes these estimates and denies any connection with the Janjaweed. Today, over 480,000 people have been murdered and 2.8 million have been displaced over the course of this genocide (United Human Rights Council).
Darfur is a region in Sudan about the size of France. It is home to about 6 million people from nearly 100 ethnic groups. Some of the residents are farmers, some are nomads, but all are Muslim (United Human Rights Council). Most of Darfur is dry and desert-like with seasonal floods while some places in Darfur have permanent springs of water and high rainfall.
There are many people who are involved in this genocide. The Sudanese government started the genocide by releasing the Janjaweed after the Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement complained about the marginalization of the area and the failure to protect sedentary people from nomad attacks. The Janjaweed is the weapon that leads the genocide. Attacks on Darfuri villages commonly begin with Sudanese Air Force bombings and then often followed by Janjaweed militia raids (Darfur Genocide). The main target of this genocide is at the non-Arab people in Sudan.
There are many reasons as to why...
