Disaster Relief For People And Their Pets

Disaster Relief

Just as Louisiana began to reconstruct itself from a natural disaster another hurricane hits and causes many evacuees sent back to shelters. Many people fail to understand or realize how people and pets still don't have a place to live. Because shelters are overpopulated due to recent natural disasters, many pets of disaster victims still need a permanent place to live.

Recent disasters caused people to become homeless. Many people did not believe the hurricanes were going to cause as much damage as they did to the affected cities. Once the storms were over with, the destruction left was overwhelming for the people in the community. In New Orleans, the city had to open the Superdome to evacuees whose homes were underwater: "Capt. John Pollard of the Texas Air Force National Guard said 20,000 people were in the dome when the evacuation efforts began. By Thursday afternoon, the number had swelled to about 30,000" (Foster). There were some people who did not want to leave their home because they were afraid to loose their valuables to looters that were on the loose. Once the storm calmed down, people began to take advantage of other peoples' loss. They began looting abandoned homes and started breaking into stores in order to get food, water, and clothing to survive until help arrived. Still some people took it to the extreme and stole electronics which they could not use due to the lack of electricity. Police officers were allowing people to take things as long as they kept it under control. Many evacuees started coming together to help each other get through the crisis. People that had extra clothes, food and water would share what they had with people in need. Victims were also trading food for water or clothes in order to make it through the day. The delay of the Federal Government was unnecessary. Something should have been done sooner. The controversy arose because people thought race was a factor in the delay of services to New Orleans. I recall watching a news report where a well know artist, Kanye West, spoke about how President Bush did not care about African American people while doing a live presentation on CNN. A few days later, President Bush had a conference and spoke about the delay: "To the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility" (Collinson).

The American Red Cross assisted with food and clothing for the affected people of Louisiana. Once the US found out how much damage was caused, the American Red Cross started asking for people to donate food and clothing. Many people also volunteered there free time to help pack and distribute the goods. The Red Cross was also in charge of distributing debit cards to many evacuees: "Late Wednesday and early Thursday, the Red Cross handed Astrodome resident cards with appointment time to receive their debt cards" (Easton). Evacuees would receive a certain amount of money according to the size of their household:...
