The purpose of this chapter is to expand further understanding on the area of training and performance based from different views from different authors. It would further explain the training that has been implemented in Tesco Corporation for their employees. Due to Tesco is a British international grocery and general merchandising retail chain therefore provide training and development opportunities to employees is the way to increase performance in their workplace.

1.1 Training and development

Training and Development is the learning process for helping employees to develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge, and abilities in order to increase performance of the employees. The focus of all aspects of Human Resource Development is on developing the most superior workforce so that the organization and individual employees can acheive their goals in service to customers (Adiele Ndunuju, 2009).

Tesco corporation offers employees both on-the-job training and off-the-job training to increase employees performance. On-the-job training methods that Tesco corporation include are shadowing, coaching, mentoring, and job rotation or secondment. On-the-job-training (OJT) is one of the training methods for the employee at the place of work while he or she is doing the actual job during the training session. A professional trainer or an experienced employee will serves as the course instructor, and employs the principles of learning often supported by formal classroom training (BusinessDictionary, 2010).

On-the-job-training (OJT) is the training that has been implemented in the organizations because it is planned, organized, and conducted to the employee's worksite. It is usually impossible to teach someone everything that he or she needs to know at a location away from the workplace thus on-the-job training often supplements other kinds of training (Markus Taylor, 2009). OJT will usually be the primary method that used for increasing employee skills and productivity. It is particularly appropriate for developing skills unique to an employee's job especially for the that are easy to learn and require locally-owned equipment and facilities (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1998). For Tesco corporation employees, on-the-jon training is directly relevant to their work and also get to know the people in their area and feel part of the team faster. Tesco corporation provide on-the-job training program to employees is because it is cheaper than off-the-job training and the employess may puts learning into the practice. This may helps them to increase job knowledge and skills directly through the training.

Off-the-job training is the one of the method training done on behalf of employers. It is generally away from the employees premises. It can involve both theory (background knowledge) and practical training and also may include assessment and examinations.
