Running heads: SHORT STORY 1Broken HeartsJair VillanuevaCollege English 11(ENG 111-1)Mr. Sergio CalFebruary 1, 2014Broken HeartsI just stood there weak and helpless, a slave to the monster I had become. I could do nothing but watch her as she slammed the door of the Ford and drove off into the night. I looked out through the window, the full moon hid behind the clouds casting an eerie gloom on the urban landscape. I looked at my reflection in the glass, tears rolled from my bloodshot eyes and down my wild stubble. I sank my fingers into my long unkempt hair and shut my eyes. I wondered how I had let this escalate into something so serious. It had been blown out of proportion, no doubt, but it was my inability to trust that had tricked me into doubting the virtues and questioning the fidelity of the one person who hadn't abandoned me, until now. I slowly made my way across the room dodging the shattered photo frames on the floor. The moonlight poured in through a crack in the wall illuminating a stack of musty hardcovers. Chinese takeaway boxes were still strewn on the coffee table from the day before leaving a bitter garlicky odour hanging low. I unhooked the telephone receiver from the wall and held it in my hand. I had decided to end what I had started; to fix this mess before if grew out of my control. I hastily dialled the number and held the receiver to my ear, after a few rings I found myself confronted with a familiar answering machine, I waited for the beep and said, ' Hey Evelyn, it's me. Please listen to me; you have got to come back, its dark and dangerous outside. I'm really sorry for what I said…I don't know what came over me… I didn't mean the things I said, I was just concerned that's all. I just can't afford to lose you after losing parents, I don't know if I'll be able to survive. You were my first love and the only person I will ever love as long as I live, my heart belongs with you and you pump my veins with your kindness and your compassion. You taught me to love, to forgive and to move on; it's only because of you that I was able to put my past behind me. Please come back home, if not for us, do it for our baby….' She had been on the road for twenty minutes. The engine of the old Ford roared and the chassis creaked as the gas indicator tipped towards 'Empty'. She switched off the headlights as dawn approached. The moon had paled into a translucent sphere and streaks of orange stretched across the horizon as the day was breaking. She was exhausted from the fight, she had been up all night and all she wanted was to be alone for a while. The last thing she needed right now was for her drowsiness to cloud her judgement. She stopped at a gas station and bought some coffee from the vending machine. She walked back to the car and took a small sip from the white Styrofoam cup, it was too hot, so she placed it on the bonnet and reached for the gas pump. She opened the glove box and rummaged for some change among...
