In order to stay competitive in today's market, organizations need to keep up with the times and promote change in order to maintain a competitive edge. An organization's diverse competitive advantage lies within the human resource department of the organization. This paper will discuss the existing trends and challenges in human resource management. The topics covered will include performance management systems versus annual performance appraisals, advantages of managing turnover in organizations, contemporary safety and health management issues in the workplace and future trends and challenges.Performance Management"Performance management is the process of creating a work environment or setting in which people are enabled to perform to the best of their abilities". (Heathfield, 2005) The start of performance management occurs when a job is defined and ends when an employee terminates from the organization. According to Susan Heathfield, a management and organization development consultant, "The goal of performance is to achieve the company mission and vision. Almost no one performs for the organization, however, if his or her own mission and vision are not accomplished as well". In order to achieve a win-win situation for both the organization and the employee, the personal objectives of the employee should match the objectives of the organization.An effective performance management system is the process through which managers ensure employees' activities and outputs contribute to the organization's goals. (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2004). By having a performance management system in place, the organization can help the employees succeed in their goals as well as the goals of the organization. Performance management provides an adequate amount of guidance so employees understand clearly what is expected of them, but provides enough flexibility so that creative talent and strengths of the employees are supported and encouraged.The performance management process begins with the identification of the components of each job and the quantifiable performance standards. The performance stands need to support the goals and objectives of the organization. The next step is to communicate to the employee the performance expectation of the organization and provide the necessary training so the employee can meet these expectations. Feedback to the employee is very important to the success of a performance management system. The feedback is usually represented in the form of a performance appraisal.Performance AppraisalsFeedback should be one factor that helps an organization to motivate and develop its employees. The more an employee is satisfied with the feedback he or she receives during the performance appraisal process, the more successful an organization can become.
