True love, two words that reminds people of sappy romance stories, Disney princesses, and Romeo and Juliet. But were Romeo and Juliet really in love? With the word “true” implying that something is real, and “love” meaning “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person” (Merriam-Webster online). True love has been taken by society to mean a real love, something that was meant to be. What traits would a true love have? For starters, there must be trust between the two people and constant devotion. However, there also must be patience and a willing to wait. First, a love has to have a strong foundation.

It is difficult to love someone if you don’t trust him or her. You can’t be in love with them and constantly be suspicious of everything they do at the same time. Romeo and Juliet come from opposite side of two sparring families with loads of mistrust on both sides. When Romeo goes to Juliet’s window, she warns him to beware, for, “If they do see thee, they will murder thee” (Act 2, Scene 2). Juliet proves her trustworthiness to Romeo by not calling her kinsmen. After their marriage night, Romeo leaves for Mantua. Juliet wishes he doesn’t have to leave, but she trusts him to keep his word and come back for her. If she had no trust in him, she would have probably killed herself earlier into the play. Romeo would have the same problem. Their trust in each other was a foundation to help build their love.
Although there are many signs that point to Romeo and Juliet’s relationship as “true love”, they are lacking an important element in their week-long affair. Romeo and Juliet had no patience whatsoever. Only a few hours within meeting each other, Romeo asks for Juliet’s pledge of love.
