There are four types of love in this world, philia, eros, agape, and storge. Philia is the love of friends. Eros is romantic love. Agape is unconditional love. And storge is the love of family. In the four stories “A Secret for Two”, “The Gift of the Magi”, “Thank You M’am”, and “Too Soon a Woman” they all portray a type of love. This essay will show you how each of the stories portray a type of love.
In the short story “A Secret for Two”, there is an old man named Pierre who delivered milk to the people of Montreal with his best friend Joseph, a horse. This story represents eros, romantic love. This is because Della and Jim expressed their love for one another in the most romantic way possible. The couple comprehended that they love each other much more than the item they had given up. Della was a little scared that Jim would not like her because of her new haircut. But Jim had said “Don’t make any mistake Dell…about me. I don’t think there’s anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less.” This shows how much of a romantic connection the couple had.
In the short story “Thank You M’am”, a boy tries to steal a woman’s purse to buy blue suede shoes. When the boy grabs the purse the women does not report him instead she takes him home. At her home he washes his face and eats a wholesome meal. The woman took care of him even though they had no relation to one another. The woman was not wealthy but she still gave him ten dollars to buy the shoes. She did not have to take care of him. The love portrayed in this story is agape, unconditional love. The woman poured her heart out unconditionally to a boy who was not her own, even though he tried to rob her. The boy was not the woman’s family, friend, or love.
