Explain the various types of organizational communication [15 mks]
Communication is a process that involves exchange of information, thoughts, ideas and emotions. Communication is a process that involves a sender who encodes and sends the message, which is then carried via the communication channel to the receiver where the receiver decodes the message, processes the information and sends an appropriate reply via the same communication channel.
Organizational communication addresses how information circulates among the employees of a company. Generally speaking, knowledge passes from one person to another within a corporation by one of two ways: via an informal or a formal communication network. Both methods are used concurrently, with lower-level employees usually directing the informal network while top supervisors control the formal patterns of communication.

External Communication
An organization, when it communicates with Governmental agencies, oth organizations, customers, clients and Public it is called external communication The media employed may be written media like letters, reports, proposals or visual media like posters, advertisements video tapes or electronic media like faxes, telegrams, e-mails, telexes. The communication might also be through teleconferences, face-to-face meetings, panel discussions or presentations, exhibitions and such events.

Advantages of External Communication
External communication helps an organization to keep its outsourcing agencies like distributors, wholesalers, retailers and clientele well informed about the company’s products, services, progress and goals. The information gets continuously updated and accurate. All organizations have to maintain cordial relationships with government agencies, licensing authorities, suppliers of raw materials, ancillary industries and financial institutions. Continual and updated information without any communication gap is essential for business houses.

There are different types of external communication used in the organisation including:

Media are high up on the list for external communications for most businesses. They are targeted through a media relations or public relations plan. You identify media that cover your business or industry, then develop external communication strategies on how best to reach them. This includes press releases, press tours, press conferences, open houses and product demonstrations.

Current Customers
You want to continue your relationship with your current customers. They have already demonstrated to you they are willing to give you their money for your products or services. Your external communications should include opt-in email communications about new or complementary products, or product updates.
