Uniforms Should Be Mandatory In Schools

1160 words - 5 pages

Bill Clinton once said, “People will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require students to wear school uniforms.” Public schools across America are searching to improve safety, school belonging and also help parents save money & students save time getting ready. One way to improve these issues would be to implement a uniform policy. The adoption of school uniforms policies will reach what public schools across America are searching for.
The potential benefits of school uniforms include decreasing violence and threat. Some instances involving designer clothing and expensive shoes have led to life-threating situations among students. Hannah Boyd says, “Now that kids are getting mugged for their designer clothes and expensive sneakers, school uniforms seem a safer alternative to many.” "It's tragic when young people without a balanced upbringing, without grounded values, without a secure education, wind up believing that it's all right to kill somebody for a pair of sneakers or jewelry or a designer jacket," Mr. Clinton said, citing recent incidents of violence by teen-agers. With school uniforms students won’t be getting mugged for their designer clothes and expensive sneakers because everyone’s wearing the same thing and won’t get jealous of what others have. Uniforms help rid of the bullies that want to beat someone up because they dress a certain way or because they don’t have what other people have. With uniform policies kids can’t get beat up or made fun of because of what they wear and the uniforms help build that confidence that kids who get beat up lack. Ever since the school uniform policy has been implemented in Long Beach the all the students have been more focused on their schools work rather than other stuff.
Uniforms also help students resist peer pressure and make it easier for security guards to spot intruders. Like for example if somebody today who looked like a student came into our school how would we know if they were an intruder or not? We wouldn’t but with uniforms we could tell who was an intruder and who wasn’t. Middle-class students report peer pressure to buy expensive clothing, cliquish behavior exacerbated by differences in what students can afford (Boyd). So with everyone wearing the same thing it breaks down those barriers that cliques form. Throughout life there will always be cliques but in high school it’s the worst, like preppy people and the athletes usually hang out together, the people that party almost every weekend hangout together,...
