On February 13, 2009 Officer Gregory Helms was dispatched to a domestic violence dispute at local residence on 236 Oak Road in Houston, Texas. In today’s society it is not uncommon for a male or women to become victim of their spouse, also known as domestic violence, while some individuals claim that it does not happen as much as we think it does, there are those who beg to differ and claim it happens quite often and is resulting in bigger problems. Regardless of one’s point of view, it is very clear that domestic violence is going on in our country and is leading to the use of alcohol and other drugs and vice versa.
Domestic violence can be defined as someone who beats, yells, and deprives their spouse of money. Domestic violence is an issue in our country that has begun to take a sharp increase in the last decade or so. Also, it has no preference and can happen to both men and women. In a statistic chart that I found on the webpage statistic brain.com it shows that 85% of domestic violence victims are women and that women from the ages of 20 to 24 are at the highest risk of being victims to domestic violence (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2013). There are many different ways to conduct domestic violence and each abuser has its own kind of characteristics, which can lead individuals that are victims of domestic violence to drink problems or drug problems which can ultimately ruin their lives.
There are many ways that domestic violence can be done, and with those different methods, comes different personalities and reasons for doing domestic violence. For instance, in Tampa, Florida there is a current investigation going on regarding a man by the name of Edly Atherley. Edly Atherley is being accused of beating and stabbing his wife multiple times and killing her, his motives are unclear, but it does go on to say that his wife was filing for a divorce (KABC-TV/DT, 2014). So if I had to guess I would have to assume that he was upset about the divorce and became filled with rage and took it out on her. Also, his personality would have to be aggressive and with his history of domestic violence it only makes sense to say this. Although Edly Atherley was an aggressive person, there are others who are not and instead of releasing their anger tend to drink their sorrow away.
There are many people that suffer domestic violence and use drinking as a way to help them momentarily forget about the troubles that they are having at home. One way that this would occur is if a male or female was suffering from some form of domestic violence and began to start drinking as a result of it. For example, say a man is coming home and a woman is throwing stuff at him and constantly yelling at him and belittling him, then he might begin to pick up a bad habit such as drinking in order to forget the troubles he is having with his significant other.
Just like there are those who drink there pain away there are also those who get...
