The unit of work is broken down into four general stages: assessing what is (diagnosis), making the choice as to what to attend to, how to move on choice, and closure. This case study involves Kenterrius “Emciii” Harris, an AA artist/lyricist, and I, co-founder of AA. Above AveRich Productions (AA) aims to produce a sound that is a stewpot of rich and meaningful lyrics. We also encourage affiliated artists to be confident and act on creative impulses in that moment to create potential hit songs. The presenting issue involves Emciii’s inability to record his ideas when they are fresh and when he is in his highest energy state.
The unit of work was used as a guide to efficiently process the behaviors observed and initiate appropriate ways to intervene during communication between the two stakeholders. I also illustrate my understanding of polarities, themes, use of self, paradoxical theory of change, and how it all relates to the process of gestalt consulting. One of my key learnings from gestalt was that my presence is one the most important tools. It provides what is lacking in the system. Showing self-awareness and utilizing the use of self illuminates the proper method to assessing resistance in the system.
The paradoxical theory of change pushes us not to change our nature but to become our nature, and by doing so, we change. This concept connected my learning to the concept of developing polarities and themes to organize the data collected from experimentation during the unit of work. The use of self, relating to the unit of work is used here to identifying the issues and choosing what to attend to. The intent is to use polarities and themes to promote the use of self in its natural state, reference them in order to experiment further and draw closure.
When I initiated the process of the unit of work the level of the system was identified as interpersonal because a boundary existed between Emciii and me. Additionally, we both showed signs of resistance in the form of confluence and deflection. Therefore, I wanted to show a keen sense of the use of self by being more assertive and objective when deciding what to work on. Because of this, I became aware that there were barriers that prevented him from recording his music projects on time. We both agreed that when an idea is fresh, it is best to record it instantaneously or at least while emotion and energy is at or close to its peak.
I chose to frame a polarity for both myself and Emciii. The polarity identified within myself was confronting……supporting. The polarity identified in Emciii is action-oriented….reflective. He tended to reflect...
