A neurotransmitter is a chemical that is stored in the axon terminal buttons, and when the neuron fires it is released into the synapse where it interacts with the receptor. There are numerous neurotransmitters in the human nervous system. They control many different behaviors that we experience. The first neurotransmitter that scientists discovered was acetylcholine. Sensation is defined as basic, immediate experiences that a stimulus elicits in a sense organ while perception is defined as the process of interpreting, organizing, and elaborating on sensations (128). Psychophysics is the study of the relationship between sensation and perception. Perception is the interpretation of the sensation that is being experienced. Saying the room is seventy degrees is a sensation, but to one person, they may perceive it to be cold while another person may think it is warm in the room. Many times are senses recognize something, but it does not tell the brain. The intensity of a stimulus must reach a certain threshold before it can activate the sensory process. Absolute and difference thresholds are two thresholds that can be reached through intensity. Absolute threshold is the minimum intensity that can be perceived. Difference threshold is minimum difference in intensity that can be distinguished.
3. Define insomnia and differentiate between temporary and chronic insomnia. Discuss factors believed to be associated with insomnia and the treatment for insomnia. (Chapter 5)
