I have been working in a department store for about 2 years and I have noticed how important the manager role is and how different is one from other. All the results depend in how the manager focuses his/her energy.
Management is a complex process; every action needs planning and development; therefore, management is a process of giving an order for activities, then planning, organizing, or controlling, to determine and accomplish objectives.
Here are a few examples of common types of managers I have met :
• Basic Manager
Some Managers are just basic, they use things that are already established, the use the same processes and follow the same planning and measuring performance without making any effort to improve .If the store schedule was from 10 to 5 for ten years, they just follow the it without research for a better schedule
• Innovative managers
Other kinds of managers are innovative; consequently they come up with fresh ideas in order to move the store into a new direction that is more beneficial and profitable. For example, five years ago the use of coupons was forbidden in the store, they used to think they would made more money in this way because they were charging the whole price without any discount but a manager realized that if they let use coupons people would buy more , since then the store sales have increases.
• Leader manager
A leader manager focuses on the reasons of the decisions but manager only considers how decisions are made. A Regular manager prefers to execute plans that are already made without even asking for possible problems. If the store experienced failures, then a leader could learn from them and use them as an example to get better and avoid future failure. During holiday the schedule for the past two years the store used to be open 24 hours, they were more sales because the store was open for more time ;however, it had more expenses, in utilities and overtime for the employees ,in the end the gain was not worth it .Consequently on the third year a new manager, who was a leader ,analyzed the situation and stop that insane schedule because he saw not good results. If that manager was not a leader, he could just keep the same schedule and drove the store to bad results
• Active manager
There is the active manager. They are highly involved in the day-to-day work and fully aware of what is going on in the work place. They would never ask employee to take on a task they would be unwilling to do themselves. Those are the kind of manager I could call when I need help; they would be able to help me in something simple as bring change for the register or something more complex like dealing with an angry costumer. They know how to resolve problems because there are active, they have seen the problems by themselves, they know all the...
