Unless the intention is to shorten one’s lifespan, the Western diet, respectively, has it all wrong. On any given day, Americans are found consuming excessive amounts of meat and dairy products. While that may not seem like such a crime—it’s treason to their bodies. What people fail to realize is that they are allowing unnecessary trans fats, numerous carcinogens, and harmful bacteria into their bloodstream. This can lead to countless complications later in life. Whereas, if people avoided meat and dairy for fruit and vegetables, the health benefits from this type of eating habit would be astonishing. Christina Pirello, an Emmy Award winning host and dedicated vegan advocate, says to have recovered from her cancer due to a vegan diet (Marto 42). Yet, the benefits of veganism don’t end at disease inhibition; consumption of fruits and vegetables can foster a friendly environment towards one’s body.
It is by no surprise that vegans have a slim physique with ample energy, and the people following the Western diet are often obese and lethargic. If one wishes to shed some extra pounds, then going vegan is the best option. Many ultra-runners and athletes go through physical training on a vegan diet (Cherepa 66). Veganism becomes an obvious diet in order to fully optimize athletic performance, since vegans are more energized during the day than non-vegans (Cherepa 67). Meat contains an excessive amount of needless trans fats, which the body ends up storing as compounds once they are converted to glucose, or sugar. According to Sandra Hood, a vegan dietician, the over-consumption of meats can lead to obesity (14). In fact, Hood continues to claim that humans who follow the Westernized diet are missing out on omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in plant based foods (15-16). These fatty acids can then help boost the body’s metabolism, thereby causing vegans to have a leaner figure.
