Definition of Vegetarianism
Healey says: “Vegetarianism is the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom, with or without the use of eggs and dairy products, but excluding entirely the consumption of any part of the body of an animal as food (including chicken, fish and seafood). The term ‘vegetarian’ means a person who follows such practice, or describes such a person, creature, establishment or food pertaining to vegetarianism”. (Healey, J , 2012; 1).
Types of Vegetarians
There are varied types of vegetarians; lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat foods that do not consist of animal flesh (meat, poultry, fish), but they eat both eggs and milk. (Edelstein, S & Sharlin, J , 2009; 229). Lactovegetarians eat foods that contain animal flesh (meat, poultry, fish), but they eat milk and dairy products. (Edelstein, S & Sharlin, J , 2009; 229). Ovovegetarians eat foods that contain animal flesh (meat, poultry, fish), but they eat eggs. (Williams, M , 2007; 54). Vegans never eat any animal products. (Williams, M , 2007; 54). There are also other types known as (near-vegetarian) which involve macrobiotics and fruitarians. Macrobiotics eat grains and vegetables, particularly sea vegetables; beans; nuts; soy products; and sometimes fish. As Edelstein and Sharlin say: “Fruitarians diets are based on fruits, nuts, and seeds and often include vegetables that are botanically fruits like avocado and tomatoes". (Edelstein, S & Sharlin, J , 2009; 229). Semivegetarians and pescovegetarians as they call themselves are also types of vegetarians. Semivegetarians do not include red meat like beef and pork products, but they often eat fish and white poultry meat. Pescovegetarians include fish, but do not eat poultry. (Williams, M , 2007; 54).
Health advantages of Vegetarianism
In contrast with nonvegetarians, vegetarians have a healthy body and they can keep it lower. Vegetarian diet has a lot of fiber and less fat. Obesity has many consequences, so a vegetarian diet is the best choice for a healthy body. (Pinna, K , Rolfes, S and Whitney, E , 2009; 65).
2-Lowering Blood Pressure
Another advantage of a vegetarian diet is keeping blood pressure and rates of hypertension in low levels. As we mentioned above that a vegetarian diet consist of less of fat and saturated fat and a lot of fiber, fruits, vegetables and soy protein. Therefore, vegetarian healthy body affords low blood pressure. (Pinna, K , Rolfes, S and Whitney, E , 2009; 65).
3-Preventing Heart Disease
Vegetarian diet does not consist of meat, so this lowering the risk of heart disease which is significant cause of death. Animal meat includes fat, saturated fat and cholesterol that lead to heart problems, while vegetarian diet has a little amount of them.
