Every individual differs in their own unique way. Some people look skinny, some look overweight, and some obtain beauty while others do not. People examine each of these qualities every day as they encounter a new person. Is there ever a thought of whether that person is a meat eater or not? The answer, most likely, is no because it is not a physical quality. Being a vegetarian however, changes the whole dynamic and way a person lives. It is not only considered a lifestyle, but also a movement taking place all over the world.
The United States has become more aware and accepting to the idea of vegetarianism. In the United States alone, three percent of people are strictly vegetarians, ten percent of people follow a vegetarian diet, and five percent of people say they are interested and would like know more about it (The Pros and Cons). A true vegetarian does not eat meat, poultry, or fish. To maintain a healthy balance, a general vegetarian diet should consist of fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains, and steer clear of fatty foods and sweets. The reasons for becoming a vegetarian vary from person to person. Animal welfare, overall health, religious beliefs, environmental concerns, food safety concerns, weight loss and maintenance are all commonly known reasons for a person to change their life style (Vegetarian Teen).
Being a vegetarian can be extremely difficult yet exciting and fun at the same time. Cooking meatless meals can become stressful when it comes to incorporating all the nutrients a person needs. Omega-3 is a fatty acid that is found in fish. For vegetarians, it can be found in flaxseed oil and tofu. Also, because of their meatless diets, vegetarians tend to lack the essential amounts of protein they need to stay healthy. This can become a major problem, but by eating foods such as beans, nuts, and potatoes a person’s protein intake can quickly be increased. By changing to a diet that does not have meat in it, fatty foods can overpower the healthy foods. An individual is more likely to snack throughout the day because they don’t get as full as fast as they used to. Therefore, the intake of fats can become an issue. To decrease fat consumption, oils could be used less. When a recipe calls for oil, the amount should be cut in half, and the remaining should be replaced with juice. Another way to reduce fatty intake is to sauté the foods being cooked in water as opposed to oil (Vegetarian Nutrition). Grilling as opposed to deep frying is a healthier option to reduce fat consumption. These options are beneficial to not only vegetarians, but meat eaters as well (Vigneri).
Although vegetarians seem to live a healthy lifestyle, there are many pros and cons to changing the way they eat.
