Verbal and Nonverbal Communication and Listening Skills
What exactly is communication? Communication is defined as the act of transferring information from one place to another. While rather this is a simple definition, when we think about how we communicate it gets a little more complex. There are various ways to communicate and you may have more than one that occurs at any given time.
The different types of communication include:
1. Verbal Communication- This could include things like face to face conversations, telephone conversations, radio or television, and even other types of media like YouTube.
2. Non-Verbal Communication- This could include things like body language, gestures, or how we act curing conversations.
There are many ways that I can think of on how I use non-verbal communication, for instance I tend to use my hands when I talk. I often notice that when I’m talking my hands will be moving depending on the type of conversation I am having. If it’s a more casual conversation they tend to move more than a in conversation that is a little more serious. Another way I communicate non-verbally is through my facial gestures. I believe you can say a lot without even saying a word. I tend to use my facial expressions during conversations so that the person talking to me knows that I am engaged in the conversation. Things like smiling, making eye contact, nods of the head, those are all things I do during conversations without even saying a word.
