The newest exoplanet discovered is named Vida Oculta; spanish for hidden life. Smaller Earth sized planet located in the Gertrude Galaxy. It is a terrestrial planet that has the qualities to sustain life. Similar to Mars before the water evaporated. It is smaller than Earth but still in the habitable zone. About half of it is covered in ocean very similar to Earth’s oceans. In the oceans there are hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. When there isn’t ocean it is mostly rocky and mountainous. There are many small caves miles down under the surface of the rocks. There are many hot springs similar to the geysers in Yellowstone park. These springs could harbor life but scientists are not sure what life could be found in them yet.
Galaxy and Star:
It is located in the habitable zone in its solar system. It orbits the star, Estrella. Estrella is a class G star very similar to the Sun in our Milky Way. Estrella is in its main sequence and is 3.9 billion years old. In the Galaxy Gertrude there are 3 other planets that orbit the star. They are named Simba, Planeta, and Gus. Gertrude is very similar to Messier 100 galaxy; a spiral galaxy about the same size. Simba is very similar to Jupiter, a gas giant. Planeta is a smaller planet much like Mars. Scientists first thought that Planeta was the planet that could sustain life, but it is too close to Estrella to have life on it.
The habitable zone is an imaginary zone where a planet could sustain life. It is far enough away from the sun that everything will not burn up, but not too far that the liquid water will freeze. The habitable zone is also sometimes called the Goldilocks zone.The habitable zone is farther away than Earth's zone is. Vida Oculta is 2.5 AU away from Estrella. While Earth is 1 AU away from the sun. They are both in the habitable zone because Estrella is bigger than our Sun.
Vida Oculta was found using the Doppler Method. NASA discovered it in 2011 but unfortunately decided it was not worth it to research. NASA was sure that there was no life then and it did not have the traits to sustain life at any point either. They finally re-looked at it in December of 2012 and they discovered life. After about a year but they went out as soon as possible because NASA believed it was very important to find out what was on the planet. The Doppler method is a way to find far away universes that could harbor life. Scientists can look for a star that is wobbling using a telescope. The star has a slight wobble because of the gravity from an unseen planet that is orbiting the star, making the method very effective. Vida Oculta further proved that there could be life in many extreme environments.
