Video Games And Their Links To Violence

1560 words - 7 pages

Violent video games have little to no link to violence in teens or adults. People have always been looking for a reason that some people do horrible things. In light of all the recent school and other shootings, the latest target is video games. People have been blaming video games for violence for years now, ever since violent video games have been made. News reports have been blaming video games more and more for each shooting, telling the public how this person played video games for x amount of hours a day, and that video games caused him or her to shoot people, and how video games encourage and reward violence. Anti-video game lobbyists have been campaigning to have violence removed from video games, citing resources that they themselves have created as reasons for such, poorly done studies where they confirm that kids are more aggressive through how much hot sauce they put on someone’s fries. While unbiased studies of video games and their links to violence are hard to come by, recent research has shown that video games do not in fact have a casual link to violence, and may have the opposite effect.
While conclusive research has been elusive, violent video games really have no link to violence in the home or in someone’s life. The reason that research is so elusive however, is that everybody has their own definition of violence or aggression. Studies that have been done, usually involve petty tricks and pranks, not real violence against someone. Research that is done on the subject is almost never the same, and can be biased based on who’s giving the results, or who’s funding the research. Video game companies would prefer results that point away from them and towards other factors, but anti-video game supporters will prefer that violence points more towards video games and less towards other things. Although such bias exists, studies done by universities, generally shows that violent video games don’t show violence, and in some cases, it actually improves cooperation between children and adults. The majority of research though, is conducted by third parties, people would would gain from the research swaying their way, leaving a definitive conclusion on the subject very difficult to come to.
Most research points one way, to the fact that violence in video games doesn’t cause violence in real life. Kids can understand the difference between a video game and between real life. Violent video games have been shown to even relieve stress, giving kids and adults a place to relieve tension, thereby reducing the violence they would have caused. Violent video games have also been shown to increase cooperation in kids and teens. Games such as Halo, Left for Dead, and other cooperative games, while violent, give kids and teens a chance to interact with each other, and learn how to work together for a common goal. Studies have shown that these games help kids to communicate to other people as well, giving them some social strategies that they may...
