Gang Related Video Games
Holding a police officer hostage while attempting to rob an average citizen isn’t what society should teach children. Perhaps beating down an associate to gain street credit while at the same time being rewarded for the violent act by getting money afterwards, is okay with parents. Children love video games but the violence isn’t the issue according to research; on the contrary, in Benedict Carey’s article he states playing the games can and does stir hostile urges. These games not only encourage crime, but place gang members in a positive category. Allowing gang violence in video games corrupts the minds of children by presenting gang members to be wealthy or idolized individuals. Parents shouldn’t allow their children to play gang affiliated video games that are hostile in nature.
Story time is important to children as most books have positive outcomes or heroic acts in their endings. Movies and video games alike tell the story, introducing and sympathizing the main character. The problem with video games in particular is the child is role playing a character that is violent with no respect for authority in todays’s world as the story falsely shows gang members having a lavish life style. Gang related games have a high influence on the younger generation starting with speaking in slang, and then generating into wearing street clothing. Even this alone can be dangerous as many non-gang members are killed often purely for the reason of wearing rival colors. Theses children love mimicking idols like famous rappers and with games it only adds fuel to the fire.
Those who grow up with gang members know the negative outcomes; nevertheless, kids only see the so called cool kids making money and being popular in school. This also holds true when it comes to video games. With Hip Hop’s chanting effects stained inside the average teen’s long term memory bank, it’s easy to go online and live the life of a hard core gun slinger. A fantasy is far from reality, but teenagers turn what is on the game into reality by taking a gun with them to school.
