The company is wholly owned by Riordan Industries, a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion". (University of Phoenix rEsource) To reach there Riordan Manufacturing's sales goal they will have to embark into the world of e-commerce in order to reach a whole new customer base. What is e-commerce? E-commerce is "The sale of goods and services by computer over the Internet". (Cheeseman, 2004, p. 354) With a new avenue of business, there are also new legal issues that the company will face, in regards to the world of e-business. Riordan Manufacturing will face new issues when conducting e-commerce, especially when doing e-commerce business in foreign countries. The main issues that Riordan Manufacturing, Inc will encounter will be trademarks, e-business security, and international law.Trademark ProtectionFirst, the company will want to be concerned with protecting its trademark, "Riordan Manufacturing". The company will want to take full advantage of trademark dilution laws, and protect against cyber-squatters and similar domain names. The company's ability to protect its trademark on an international basis may be limited due to weak trademark dilution laws in other countries. Riordan Manufacturing could sue in U.S. courts under the Federal Trademark Dilution Law, but it might be difficult to collect damages in cases involving foreign nationals. In some cases the company would also have the option to go through the World Intellectual Property Organization.E-commerce SecurityAnother issue that Riordan Manufacturing will face is security. Security is especially important in today's environment, the right measures need to be in place to protect a company's intellectual property and e-business data. Riordan Manufacturing, Inc will need to add measures to strengthen its networks protection to prohibit unauthorized access to the company's network and data. Unauthorized access could result in loss of trade secrets, customer information, or other data that is essential to the success of its operation.
