Huffman Trucking was founded in 1936 by K. Huffman, a native of Cleveland, Ohio. Huffman started the company with a single tractor-trailer. The growth of Huffman Trucking was the direct result of World War II and the increased demand for carrier services between factories in the Midwest to ports on the East Coast. The fleet had increased in size to 16 tractors and 36 trailers by 1945. The business relationship forged with the U.S. Government continues today. Huffman Trucking continued to grow from internal sales and the acquisition of five Eastern regional carriers. This growth has enabled Huffman Trucking to continue to be privately held. (E-Resource, 2005)Despite all of Huffman Trucking's successes, there are several types of discrimination that may occur in the workplace. With the company being a trucking business, which is usually thought by many to be a man's job, there is a risk of sex discrimination, and equal pay issues. In many different cultures the man is considered as the breadwinner or the hard worker in the family. More often than not, these social norms can cause gender stereotypes, resulting in discrimination. Stereotypes have long been known to cause inequality within the workplace. Despite recent increases in women's educational attainment, women also continue to earn less than men in the labor market - even when they hold the same degree and work experience. For years, women have been discriminated against when it comes to obtaining a position and a salary equal to men. Women are now protected against this form of discrimination under the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 protects both sexes from pay discrimination based on sex. (Cheeseman, 2004)Huffman Trucking may argue that the reason women may receive a lower salary or a lesser position is because, according to social norms, they are more dedicated to theirfamily than their career. This stereotype tends to be a preventive measure among employers; in most cases, women do not even get the chance to prove this assumption wrong. While it may be a mother's maternal nature to be concerned with her family, it does not mean all family matters come before her career. Innately, women tend to have a more social nature than men; they are likely to be better listeners, more attentive, and have an easier time communicating with others.
