When the thought of a team comes to mind a person usually envisions a group of people physically sitting in the same building or at least in the same town. Like everything else, the common makeup of a team has evolved. Nowadays we still have traditional teams, but through communications technology we also have virtual teams. Many discussions and debates have occurred over virtual teams vs. traditional teams. It is common for the average person to assume that a virtual team is made up of a group of people who don’t know each other and that no progress will be made. Not so fast! Let’s do some comparison!

Virtual teams are sometimes easier to build because you are not limited to a group of people to pick from. The manager of a virtual team can pick and choose members according to the team’s needs. In traditional teams each member must be able to work alone, learn new technology, and have the ability to work with functional and cultural boundaries.
Communication is much easier with traditional teams because all members are physically present and members do not have to log onto a computer to communicate. In traditional teams members communicate face to face and a meeting can easily be called at any time.
As far as performance goes both traditional and virtual teams require all members to have a positive attitude toward the group. In virtual teams members must have good communication and functionality skills. Also in virtual teams each member must have self-discipline and be self-motivated.
