Volcano comes from the name "Vulcan" the Roman god of fire. All volcanoes have different shapes, sizes and types of eruptions. They are very powerful and unpredictable. Volcanoes are an astonishment to nature. They are awesome manifestations of what fiery power the Earth holds within. They tend to exist along the edges between tectonic plates.Classified by the extent of their activity, there are three types of volcanic activity. They include: active volcano, dormant volcano and extinct volcano. An active volcano is one that regularly erupts. A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted in a while and is also referred to as sleeping. An extinct volcano is one that hasn't erupted for approximately 100,000 years and is also no longer active.Inside the volcano is where magma is found. Volcanoes erupt when the Earth's upper mantle and lower crust melts. Our Earth is hot inside. Magma escapes inside the Earth. When it escapes from its current space which is usually confined, a large amount of energy is also released. So due to the increasing pressure, the magma is pushed up to the top where molten rock, ash and gases eventually escapes. When this happens, a volcanic eruption occurs due to a sudden or continuing release of energy caused by near surface or surface magma movement. Gases in the form of steam are released during the eruption of a volcano. Magma is also referred to as lava when it flows out during the eruption of the volcano. Lava is magma that breaks the surface and flows from the volcano. The magma is the liquid inside the volcano whereas the liquid that flows out of it is the lava. If the magma is very fluid, it flows rapidly down the volcano slopes whereas lava that is more sticky and less fluid moves slower. Lava cools slowly and thickens as it hardens. Temperatures of magma range from 700 degrees Celsius to 1300 degrees...
