Mistakes can easily be made. In hopes of finding the best match possible, the match maker decides to look at economic factors (Fish, “Arranged”). This insures the newlyweds to be financially stable and leaves little room for objection. As a result, the dowry system is only strengthens. The dowry system is a process in which the girl’s side presents the boy’s side with money, jewelry, gold, cars, and other luxurious items (Cerejo, “Disadvantages”). Through this process, the girl’s family is essentially buying their daughter’s husband in the hopes of a happy long-lasting marriage. Marrying a citizen of a first world country, seems to be the most popular and fasted route to establishing a home in a well-developed nation. Women like Maria Cruz, deserve to be sent to prison for arranging marriages between immigrants of other countries and American citizens in exchange for thousands of dollars (Thayer, “Woman Sentenced”). Individuals leaving their home countries to marry for citizenship, have little to no idea what type of person they are marrying. All they know the individual can have a criminal record, children from a previous marriage, or a mental disorder. For women like Maria Cruz, it is her job to simply grant citizenship to the immigrant not find them true love. She is not getting paid for establishing a proper life for the immigrant, in which he/she will have their happily ever after. Instead of filing for a marriage that will ultimately lead to a divorce individuals should go through the legal process of applying for a citizenship and enter this country on their own terms and with their safety.
