Website Evaluation Essay

941 words - 4 pages

The Career I choose to look at was that of a Mental Health Counselor. I looked at the data for this career from the data sources of O’Net online, the Occupational outlook, and infonet.

- O’Net Online provides information on careers including: the tasks a counselor would do, the technology they might use, the skill and knowledge set require, the personality type that best fits the job, the abilities needed for a counselor, the job environment and context, similar and related occupations, job outlook, educational requirements, and average earning potential. As well, O’Net provides a job search link for careers of that nature within a specific area.

Pros of the site: Very detailed orientated with the requirements and expectations of the job. As well, the region specific job search is an added bonus.

Cons: The site can be too detailed! It seemed a lot of the categories were repetitive. I think this may be a potential drawback for someone that is quickly looking for careers and such. As well, the site organization seemed a bit backwards. It seemed to me the important information, like job outlook, earning potential, and educational requirements were listed at the very bottom of the page.

- The second data site I reviewed was the Occupational Outlook by the US Department of Labor. This site provides most of the same information as the O’net site, including: the tasks a counselor would do, the technology they might use, the skill and knowledge set require, the personality type that best fits the job, the abilities needed for a counselor, the job environment and context, similar and related occupations, job outlook, educational requirements, and average earning potential. What was additional for the Occupational outlook was it went into detail in which environments the counselor has been recorded in. For example, it details the number of reported positions in private practice, hospitals, governmental agencies, etc. Additionally, the statically information is provided in an easy to read graph format.

Pros of the side: very well organized. The key information is located near the top of the page. The statistical information as also presented in a graph format. As well, you can create a easy to ready PDF version of the information.

The cons: The only major con that I notices was that it did not provide a job search link the O’Net site provided.

-The Last site is the Infonet site. Information on this site included: the tasks a counselor would do, the technology they might use, the skill and knowledge set require, the personality type that best fits the job, the abilities needed for a counselor, the job environment and context, similar and related occupations specific to a state.

Pros of the site: It...
