Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both tell a story of two lovers who can not be together because of a feud. The characters in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar in their actions but are different in family background and their attitudes. Two characters that are similar, but different are Tybalt and Bernardo. The two characters had different attitudes and family backgrounds.Tybalt’s attitude was more daring, while Bernardo’s waited for the trouble to come to him first. Even though, Tybalt and Bernardo both come from different backgrounds, they have hatred toward the other side and the actions toward their enemies were the similar, which cost the lives of others and themselves.
Tybalt and Bernardo have different attitudes, Tybalt’s attitude is daring and always starts the fight first between the two families. For example in Act 3, Scene 1, when Tybalt saw the Mercutio and Benvolio, he began ...view middle of the document...
This made Bernardo bring out his men and have a fight with the Jets. Not only are their attitudes different, but their backgrounds are very different. Bernardo is from a gang called Jets, while Tybalt is from a royal family called the Capulets. Bernardo from Puerto Rico and Tybalt is from a city from Verona. The time period they lived in is also different, Tybalt is from the medieval or Renaissance Era, while Bernardo is from the 1960s.
Bernardo and Tybalt were also similar to each other. Both of the character’s actions cost their own and other people’s lives because of the hatred they had for the other side. Bernardo had hatred for the Jets because since the day he moved to America he was harassed and threatened by the Jets. This concluded into a rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. During the fight Tony tried to calm Bernardo and Riff, but Bernard and Riff were was too focused on winning the rumble and being angry at the other gang. Bernardo was so angry at the Jets that decided to be unfair and kill the Jet’s leader, Riff, when Riff was not looking, Bernardo stabbed him. Out of anger Tony, Riff’s best friend, stabs Bernardo too. This results in Bernardo and Riff dying in the fight. A similar event happened in Romeo and Juliet, when Mercutio and Tybalt were fighting. The fight happens when Mercutio and Tybalt start to verbally insult each other, until Mercutio pulls out a sword first. Romeo attempts to stop the fight but both of them decided not to listen to him. Tybalt decided to not play fair either and stabbed Mercutio when he was on the ground. This caused Romeo to get furious and kills Tybalt. At the end, Tybalt and Mercutio dies. If Bernardo and Tybalt made the right choice, to back off when a weapon was taken out and listened to Tony or Romeo, then they won’t have died.
The two stories, Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story have much in common in their storyline. But the characters have some differences, as well as similarities. Bernardo, from West Side Story , and Tybalt, from Romeo and Juliet, had similarities on how they handle situations but were different in their origins and characteristics.
