Leadership is often the most misused, misplaced or misunderstood word in recent times. According to Bolden, “Leadership is currently one of the most talked about issues in business and organization. It is hard to turn on the television, open a newspaper or attend a conference without coming across numerous references to leaders, leadership and leading”. As it formed the basis of numerous articles, books, seminars and the academics alike have all done pretty much in shedding expository light on the subject, but what seems to have happened is expanded curriculum bringing along wider and deeper scope to cover, for those wanting to study the topic leadership. Leadership is defined as the art or process of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals (Weihrich, Cannice & Koontz, 349).
Leadership has various angles of consideration based on the interest at hand, majorly: political or business angles. The world has and is still experiencing the exploit of various political giants from Winston Churchill to Mahatma Gandhi cutting through history to the days of Nelson Mandela and to the present era Barrack Obama. All this competence political figures or otherwise registered effects on the political stage of the world and their country/region in particular, just as the world is experiencing the enigmatic exploit of Vladimir Putin. All these form one angle in the scope of leadership; as leadership in itself cuts across every sphere of human existences. However, for the purpose of this paper as scheduled by the course, the leadership angle of interest focuses on Charismatic (business) Leadership.
1.1 CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP
According to Weber as quoted by Palshikar, charismatic is defined as “resting on devotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroism or exemplary character of an individual person and of the normative patterns or order revealed or ordained by him.” This highlights the features of leaders, who are in turn regarded as charismatic. The word charisma, itself embodies the clear meaning as Oxford dictionary online defines charisma as “compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others”. It becomes evidently clear that the essence of charismatic leadership is the availability exceptional element of attraction, potent enough to gather or command compelling attention and followership.
