Some people say happiness is only temporary. Are those people right though? Is there such thing as an eternal happiness? In the words of Don Draper, “What is happiness? The moment before you need more happiness!” This statement evokes our minds to think of these questions and where we stand on the matter. I find it easy to agree with Mr. Draper, yet, I also cannot help but wonder if anyone can ever experience a happiness that has never faded. For people who believe in it, one could find unfailing happiness once they get to heaven to spend eternity in peace. However, do we really need to wait until we die for that? Notice how he didn’t just put happiness, but the pursuit of it. Some question how he knew to put that in there? It is because he understood that life and liberty are handed to us, but contentment is something we all need to achieve on our own. In the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” Will Smith’s character adds his opinion to Jefferson’s statement saying, “Maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue; and maybe we can actually never have it.” I think, when saying this, he is not talking about the impermanent kind, but the true kind. At the end of the movie, after getting the job he worked so hard for, he states, “This part of my life... this little part right here? This is called happiness." So ultimately he achieved the joy that he questioned even existed. People can spend their lives trying to pursue true happiness or they can question its existence. To me, when you work hard enough, it will come to you. Although very rare, when it does come, I think it is just something you only know once it happens. If you even have to question whether you are truly happy or not, then I say you are not.
When it comes to happiness, many agree with Aristotle’s words, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” I entirely agree with this because I think that we control our own fate. We have the ability to make decisions and choices that affect our entire lives. So, if we have that ability, we surely...
