Henna
Henna is a form of body art. It is used to temporarily to stain your skin and/or fingernails. Henna is commonly traded as a powder made by drying, milling and sifting the leaves. The dry powder is mixed with one of a number of liquids, including water, lemon juice, or strong tea, and other ingredients, depending on the tradition and culture. An example is shown in figure 1. Various shades are procured by mixing henna with the leaves and fruit of other plants, such as indigo, tea, coffee, cloves and lemon. The resulting paste is often used as a hair dye. During hot weather, henna acts as a cooling agent when applied to the palms of the hands and the bottoms of the feet. When used in decorative body art, sugar and oil are also added to the mixture to strengthen the colour and overall beauty in the designs.
People chose to use henna because of its staining quality and pleasing appearance on the skin. Henna has been used throughout the ages to dye hair and create body art designs. It is thought that a similar practise called Mehandi originated in the deserts of India when the people living there discovered that covering their hands and feet with coloured paste from the Henna plant helped them to feel more fancy for special events or when dressing up, other origins then took interest in this and renamed it “henna”based on the name of the plant, this was only a theory and was never finalised.

The use of Henna for body art is several centuries old at least. The people of ancient Egypt and India used this form of temporary tattoo for religious ceremonies, wedding festivals, and for simple body adornment. Henna is a plant which grows in the tropical climates of Africa, northern Australia, and Southern Asia. Archaeologists researched around the topic of henna decoration and discovered that henna was used in Ancient Egypt to stain the fingers of Pharaohs prior to mummification. Research also argued that Egyptians were definitely not the only ones to use henna but also that indigenous and aboriginals used this practice and believed that the naturally derived substances or ochre, blood and henna had qualities that improved human awareness of the earth’s energies.
With centuries of migration and cultural interaction it's difficult to determine where particular traditions began, but there is a lot f documentation that indicates that the art of henna (called mehndi in Hindi & Urdu) has been practiced for over 5000 years in Pakistan, India, Africa and the Middle East.
