Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s originally used as a rehabilitation program for prisoners of war and was later found to be of great benefit to anyone seeking a higher level of fitness. It focuses on developing a balanced body through core strength, flexibility, breath, and awareness in order to support efficient, agile movement. The ABC’s of Pilates are awareness, breath, and core. The benefits of doing Pilates are a stronger core, relief of lower back pain, flexibility, posture, and the ability to move your body more efficiently.

This can be done by lying down on your back relaxing your muscles and inhaling deeply filling your lungs with air and expanding your ribs to the side, then exhaling deeply feeling your ribs coming back into your body. Doing this a few times helps set the tone for you breathing for the remainder of your work out.
As I mentioned earlier the benefits of doing Pilates are building a stronger core, relief of lower back pain, flexibility, posture, and the ability to move your body more efficiently. All the exercises I learned in Pilates had there foundation in the abdominal muscles, to successfully complete the movement the abdominal muscles must be engaged. I personally suffered from occasional lower back pain and had a hard time doing certain exercises prior to taking Pilates. With Pilates you became more aware of what muscles you were using and when strengthening your core it took a significant level of strain off of my lower back and helped strengthen it. I felt that Pilates helped elongate my muscles, since the exercises were combined with forms of stretching and fully opening up the body. This...
