Quantum mechanics is a form of physics that is used to study very tiny objects like atoms. Many people have heard of quantum mechanics before whether it was from a book or a television show. Automatically people think “nerd” or “geek” which is pretty much correct, but those people themselves have no idea how quantum mechanics improved their lives or even how it works. It may sound difficult, but it is really not that hard to understand.

When they gain energy, the electrons jump out a level and when they release energy, they go back in a level (McCoy). One of the most important aspects to take in when talking about quantum mechanics was stated by David Morin, who said “no one fully understands quantum mechanics, but it is used to make predictions that are consistent with experiments” (Morin).
Those were just the basics of quantum mechanics so now comes the question, “well what is it used for”. Quantum mechanics is used and applied for a variety of different experiments and tests. Its main purpose is to study very small objects like stated earlier in the report, but quantum mechanics is used for much more. Quantum mechanics allows scientists to study the behavior of particles to let them know what the particle is doing; also allowing them to predict the behavior of the particle (Ismeal). Another great use for quantum mechanics is that it also lets scientist know how much energy an atom can hold, allowing the scientist to further their knowledge in the field of chemistry and physics (McCoy). Physicists also use quantum mechanics to study one of the hardest objects to study. Light. This allows major advancements in the world’s technology and can one day change the way we use computers with devices called quantum computers that don’t use transistors or binary to run, but simply quantum bits called qubits to obtain information and calculate equations (Spring).
The history of quantum mechanics is a long and very tedious story involving many scientists and lots of research, but the history can be broken down to a few scientists that made the most important discoveries of quantum mechanics. It all started in 1900 when Max Planck was conducting an experiment on a hypothesis created by a group of scientist in about 1890. Plank was trying to recreate the experiment using Newton’s basic laws of physics, but every time he looked at his results, he found the numbers to be unrealistically huge. He stated that energy was released in small packages called quanta, and that thousands of these quanta were released in the form of light (Tavolacci). Plank then stated that the size of the quanta was directly related to the frequency of the light hitting the particle (Tavolacci). Plank decided to take a very risky move in the world of science and create an equation to prove his hypothesis. The equation was E=hv or energy equals Plank’s constant (6.63 x 10-34 J) times the light frequency (Tavolacci). Later in 1905 Albert Einstein was studying the work of Max Plank and decided to indulge himself in the subject. He stated that light was basically a particle of energy called a photon, which was a very risky move for his career because the science community thought of light as a wave (Tavolacci).
