This research proposal is a literature review designed to answer the question “what is the experience of burnout syndrome for mental health nurses?” In order to answer this question, background information will be gathered by the way of the literature review and the essential points will be discussed under the appropriate headings. Under the heading the concept of burnout there is a discussion on workplace pressure and workplace stress which leads into a discussion on the concept of the burnout syndrome and the deteriorating effects it has on a number of mental health nurses. Carmeli and Johnson (2006) state that the degree of effect will depend on the emotional intelligence and maturity of the mental health nurse, which may assist the nurse in avoiding an adverse outcome. To this end, further research is required in order to progress the wellbeing of mental health nurses.
Purpose of the study
When reviewing literature concerning the burnout syndrome there was a noticeable paucity of research that focussed directly on the proposed research question. The articles that were found were generally qualitative in nature and although relative to health care workers the vast majority did not relate specifically to mental health nurses whom the writer views as a quite unique standalone workforce due to their training in mental health care. The purpose of this study is to review the emotional state of mental health nurses relative to burnout and from the data determine how to introduce an educational plan that may strengthen the coping strategies of those concerned.
There is a time restraint for this research project, which must be acknowledged, developed and built into this proposal. The particular research project must be completed in a twelve week framework (one semester) therefore the project should be referred to as a mini-research project. Relative to the stricture of the time framework, it is anticipated that the only research that can be achieved in such a short space of time is a literature review. Due to the academic quality of the papers that need to be reviewed, it is anticipated that the literature review will be rewarding as it will give greater insight into the current field of knowledge and perhaps give some indication as to the direction future research. However, it should be acknowledged that to build a platform for future research could take another two years and if successful another year to develop and educational program that will be of benefit to mental health nurses that may help them to overcome the phenomena of the burnout syndrome.
Occupational stress causes emotional and oft times harmful response to the demands of the activity of mental health nursing and the nurse’s emotional capability. The environments in which mental health nurses are employed often generate high levels of stress due to the nature of the consumers being treated therein. Stress related disorders do occur among all nurses, in various hospital departments and in community nursing, but in particular amongst mental health nurses even though they are trained specifically to cope with this phenomenon. Unfortunately the presence of high levels of...
