What It Means To Be A Man Thesis Statement: The objective of this essay is to effectively provide the reader with a definition and more importantly a better understanding of the word man. From a religious perspective man was created as an image of God; thus the title man itself should be respected. Many people use the word so often that they never have a full understanding of the word itself. For the most part people give the word the denotation of someone of the male sex, which is understandable, but what I will demonstrate is that the word itself stands for much more. When I was young my dad would always say things to me like "work like a man." When I did something good it was always followed with "good man," and, when I did something bad, it would never have the word man in it. By the age of twelve I had realized this, but the question I always had was what's a man? In school we were taught the physical characteristics of a man and we were to accept that as what a man truly was. This is where I start my definition far longer than the two previous. In my short-lived life to the best of my knowledge I have come up with what I believe is the true definition of a man. I've narrowed it down to what some would say is a symbol, but I would say is so much more. I've come to realize that there is no age limit or requirement for one to be considered a man. Many people think of a man as only someone who is older than around twenty-five. What makes up a man is certain Fernandes 2 qualities. I think there are all qualities that everyone wants and respects, and, when someone has these traits, we look at him like a man. In general, when people envision one of these symbols they think of someone firm and tough such as a soldier, a firefighter, for example. I disagree.A "real man" is someone who has respectable morals and leads himself in a dignified manner. He is a person you trust with your secrets, your money; to get the job done; to be courteous; to take care of your daughter, sister, mother, a country, and more importantly, your life. The occupation isn't important it's the person's character that does.In the many readings we read there are supporters of my definition. In "The Story of Creation" Genesis 1-4 he says, "Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness"...
