What justifies the breaking of the law
What does it take for a human being to be able to step out of the comfort of their own well being just to stand up for the liberty of others under an unjust government? If it was not for the practices that Gandhi posed, there would be no independence in India. If it were not for Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement, no telling what the U.S. would look like concerning the separation of black and white. If no one were to stand up for what is right, the world would be much different from what it does today. The American revolution would have never taken place; The German Empire would have won the First World War. What justifies the breaking of the law; How can one break the law and still be a well respected and yet a moral person? An excerpt reads from the the famous speech “Give me liberty or give me death” by Patrick Henry, “Mr. president, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. But is this the hope of wise men, engaged in a great struggle for liberty” (Henry). At this time in the late 1700s, the American Revolution is taking place; Great Britain is suppressing the Colonies. Patrick Henry believed that it is human nature to look away from a time of treachery, slaughter, or the stake of the innocent, but only the truly wise would know not to think so softly of the situation concerning the future liberty for this magnificent country that I get to call my own. Another excerpt from the Declaration of Independence reads “He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers” (DOI). This is a grievance pointed toward King George III that means that he has stopped the colonies from depending on themselves and now under the jurisdiction of Great Britain. A letter that was written to Martin Luther King after his arrest in Birmingham from fellow clergymen states “In Birmingham, recent public events have given indication that we all have opportunity for a new constructive and realistic approach to racial problems” (Clergymen). I am proud to be able to say that I am an American and I honor the men and women that died in the course of battle and to them who died for standing up for what what was right.
