Marijuana is the most habitually used illegal drug in the U.S. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a recent government study shows that over 98 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once in their lifespan. Preview of 3 Main Points: Today I am going to give you three informative points about marijuana and the legalization of it. First, what exactly is marijuana? Second, how does it affect us? Third and finally, I will speak about when it became illegal and the trend of states now legalizing marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. Using these three points, I am going to attempt to enlighten you about marijuana and the legalization process.
What is marijuana? According to WebMD, marijuana, or cannabis sativa, is a naturally occurring plant that contains several psychoactive ingredients, including delta-9 tetra hydro cannabinol (THC). Marijuana is usually used because the THC in the marijuana creates a relaxed state of being, relieves pain, and may give a sensation of euphoria. The appearance of marijuana depends on how it will be used, but is regularly made using only the flowering buds of the plant and may be brown, grayish, or green in color. It can be smoked in a pipe, blunt, cigarette, vaporizer or consumed. Marijuana goes by many street names, including pot, weed, grass, and maryjane and its smoke has a powerful and unique fragrance which can fluctuate depending on what strain of marijuana used. Now that we know what marijuana is, let’s look at how exactly it affects us physically and emotionally.
How does marijuana affect us? When marijuana is smoked or consumed, THC quickly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which transmits the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body. Marijuana over activates the endocannabinoid system, which triggers the “high” feeling and other effects that users experience.
