This does not mean that China is going to “buy back ” Taiwan with its money powers or military powers . Until 2013, it was estimated that China has invested only less than $800 million, much less than that of US and that of Taiwan to Mainland China, which is US $22.1 billion and US $129 billion respectively . Chinese investors are harshly censored when investing in Taiwan by many different forces, and any politically inclined investment is called to end immediately. Every investment that China has made goes through the inspection of US, and the US government will stop any attempt China has to “buy back” Taiwan. Thus Taiwan is under safe watch of different countries to avoid any illegal movements from China.
Many would say that the recent announcement of the Free Trade agreement is an example of China trying to buy Taiwan with its money and power. The agreement has led to massive student protests in Taipei. Students “occupied the legislature and there were street demonstrations of over 100,000 people.” The reason for these protests is that passing of the agreement did not go by a “clause-by-clause” review. Furthermore, KMT has a majority seats in the congress and many fear that they will unrightfully use their powers and reunite with China despite the will of the citizens. Almost all of the protestors are students, and many of these students are of the age to act irrationally. They are taught under the environment of disliking Mainland China and have high chances of acting too drastic. True, there is a chance that the Chinese government is manipulating the Taiwan government to do what is most preferable for them, but under the influence of the current world economic crises, no one know whether the agreement brings more benefit to Taiwan or to Mainland China.
On the other hand, blogs show that many people are for the agreement, but are against the abuse of power of the current president, Ma Ying-jeou, in Taiwan. Furthermore, there are chances that many of them are actually deluded by the opponent parties of PRC, to fight against the agreement just because they dislike China but forgot the benefits that the agreement can bring.
Despite the deluding forces in China, some other countries support Taiwan to be independent, and they back Taiwan up by selling them weapons and trying to evoke tension between the two lands. This lures both countries to give up peaceful settlement and pick up weapons to fight against each other. Many people are agitated and misled, which is understandable considering the reputation that China has, but any propaganda is biased and is written to make people make moves the way they want. Blindly believing in only one of the many viewpoints will only result in a biased perspective. China may be one of the few communist countries in the world, but it may not be as bad as they say. In fact, China respects Taiwan and is trying to settle disputes through meetings and talks. According to Xi, “we are willing to hold...
