Why Are Stepfamilies Considered To Be Complex Institutions?

975 words - 4 pages

Approximately forty-five percent of all people in the United States will marry divorce and remarry. Because of this statistic and the rising rates of divorce this is also making the number of step families to rise in the country. Remarrying can be very difficult most of the time and this may make your step family a complex institution. A complex institution is an institution that affects people in more than one way. For example, it may cause physical and mental issues and stress.
On the outside we may see a very happy couple who has just been remarried from a divorce, but on the inside it may be a completely different story. One thing many people do not consider before getting remarried is the affect that it has on the people around them and the one's close to them. Children will usually have the hardest struggle with a new step parent or step family. Step families affect children both mentally and physically. It may be very hard to adjust to having that new mother or father figure in their lives or even new siblings. Sadness and depression may occur because children that have been so used to getting a lot of attention will not receive as much now and their lives are dramatically changing, usually. Many children want their parent's together, especially the younger children, and they do not want to have to change their lifestyle's. The changing lifestyle is where we see the physical aspect set in. Many children may have had a certain schedule with their single parent's but as soon as they are remarried it may change. If your mother want's all electronic devices off by eleven on weekends, and that is how it has always been, and then all of a sudden your step father comes into the picture and decides he wants it to be ten when things are shut off this may be very different for you. I know that is not a very big example but sometimes routine changes are much larger and much harder to adjust to. Generally, things do not stay the same as they were before. People may even move to a different place and this can be very hard on children, especially smaller kids. Adjusting to having new siblings can also be a very hard physical adjustment to the children before it may have just been them and all the toys and attention was given to them. But, now all of the attention and what not has to be divided among the children and this may be very hard on some kids.
Not only is it mentally and physically difficult for their children but it may be for the parent's as well. I know this from personal experience's. My situation does not yet contain a step family but it is similar to their problems. I have...
