Why Do Students Cheat ? Essay

1445 words - 6 pages

“It is not a question of who cheats, it is a question of who cheats the most”. If everybody does it then why does it matter if you cheat every once in a while to get by. If students successfully pull it off then they easily slip by on a test or homework assignment without having to do anything, giving them more time to do leisurely activities. The reason some students cheat is deeper than that most of the time, with college requirements becoming higher, students struggle to reach those requirements without a little help sometimes. Students resort to cheating due to GPA’s, the pressure, and the reward.
To start, GPA’s are simple, the higher the grade you get the higher your GPA will be. To be able to play in any high school athletics a student's GPA must stay above a 2.3. Colleges look at GPA’s and can determine if they accept students or not based off of them. So to a student, keeping up your GPA can mean the world to them, because they know that if they don't keep it up they will not be able to play the sport they love, or they will not be able to get into a good college and start a good life. “Students may opt to cheat in various ways to give themselves an edge with their grades or to help them get better marks in a class” (Wood). So these GPA’s can causes some student-athletes to want to cheat. With having to sit at school for seven hours, then go to their sport for three hours, it leaves very little time to be able to study six subjects and do the homework for all of them.”Students will turn to cheating to lighten the burden of homework which often takes as many hours to complete as a full time job” (Wood). Some Student-Athletes who dont cheat stay up into the morning hours leaving them with the possibility of five hours of sleep max. Causing them to be tired and unrefreshed for the next school day so they do not learn and absorb everything they could if they were fully awake, and they are tired for practice of their sport leaving them with very little energy so they do not succeed as well as they could in their sport. With the little time they have they might try to get a picture of a test or copy someone elses homework to save them time and effort. Cheating gives them more time to be able to sleep, causing them to be more awake and alert the next day for class and their sport, which can make a huge difference in how much they learn and how well they do in their sport.
Furthermore the pressure’s of cheating can come from every angle of students lives. “In a survey completed by business professor Donald L. McCabe between 2006 and 2010, a whopping 40 percent of United States undergraduates admitted to some form of cheating in college” (Wood). Their parents might want them to get good grades, their friends might be getting good test scores causing them to feel like they need to get theirs up, colleges only accept people with a certain GPA or higher and a certain test score or higher, their classmates could all be getting great grades and...
