Viktor Frankl said, “Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked” (Frankl, 1959, p.131). We are constantly being presented with opportunities to make our lives worth living. Choosing a profession is one of those opportunities, and I do not want to let it go to waste. I have spent the last four years of high school contemplating my college education and the profession that I want to pursue. The decision weighed heavily on me because I wanted to make sure that I chose a job that was both fulfilling and interesting to me. I want to go beyond just providing physical care to my future patients and get to know them on a personal level.
I know that nursing is a job that I will never get bored with. I have always loved the sciences and healthcare, so nursing is the perfect fit for me. The further along I go in my studies, the more certain I am that I picked the right major. Nursing is such an active and hands on profession, which is perfect for me because I know I would not be satisfied working at a desk job. The body of knowledge is always expanding, leaving endless opportunities for improvement and growth as a nurse. I am excited that even after I receive my degree, I will be learning new things constantly. After graduating, I am going to work toward receiving my labor and delivery certification. Although I want to start as a labor and delivery nurse, there are so many different nursing specializations that I am interested in and hope to work in at some point in my career as a nurse. I have not yet decided whether or not I am going to return to graduate school, but I am always open to the idea of furthering my education.
Hickey (2009) stresses the importance of meeting your full potential in both life and nursing by testing your limits and stepping outside of your comfort zone.
