Teaching involves educating and instructing individuals in an environment that encourages collaboration. In this environment the students learn the basic knowledge and skills that are necessary to function within society. I base this definition on the works of famous philosopher Paulo Freire who showed great concern for the oppressed. He placed great emphasis on dialogue drawing direct connections to the importance of critical pedagogy. In following his theories on value, learning, society, and opportunity it gives a clearer picture on the makeup of U.S educational system and questions that administrators and staffs should ask when choosing the profession of teaching. When choosing the profession of teaching one would have to know the principles of values and learning in education.
Value: When it comes to education it should increase the knowledge and skills of students so that they can become productive individuals by promoting critical thinking and allowing the students to ask questions about the material they are learning. As an educator we have to be sensitive to the conditions and environment of these students in order to foster an environment of respect, and safety.
Learning: Knowledge have many definitions, however, I choose to define it as a process where a set of information and skills are passed on through understanding, discussion and reflection. When passed on this process is known as learning. Learning results from behavioral, emotional and societal influences and experiences; where these influences and experiences helps a student to acquire, improve or make important changes in the way that they view the world, the knowledge that they have, and the beliefs and value system that they follow. In Friere’s theory knowledge is not a set commodity that is passed from the teachers to the students. Students must construct knowledge from knowledge they already possess.
