Why Children Should Not Be In Beauty Pagents

872 words - 3 pages

What is normal? Some children think normal is wearing three layers of makeup sitting under a dryer for 2 hours until their hair is done and posing on stage hoping to be the next "fill-in-the-blank." This is just an average day in the life of "child stars" in beauty pageants that began in the 1960's. They consist of modeling sportswear, evening attire, dance and talent. They are judged based on individuality in looks, capability, poise, perfection and confidence. Mothers everyway encourage their kids to play "dress up." However, some drive it over the top by entering their toddler in a pageant. They say it helps them get involved with other kids and see the world. Um, kids can see the world on vacation and get to know other kids at school and while playing outside. Children in Beauty Pageants are caused by assertive parents and grow up with psychological tribulations and therefore shouldn't be permissible. Some mothers live through their daughters. Let's call this mother Sue. When Sue was younger, her mom would not allow Sue to enter a pageant. So when Sue grows up she lives through her daughter forcing her to become this perfect princess. Why not just let the kid be a kid? Parents should stop treating their kids like some kind of machine. More than 100,000 children under the age of 12 compete in about 3,000 child beauty pageants around the nation. Some parents force plastic surgery on their kids as young as when they are pre-teens. They want their lips to be fuller or maybe their nose is the wrong shape. What is that telling the child? Its telling them that in order to succeed in life you have to have the latest styles in hair, makeup and dress up is fun and exciting. It effects their feelings of self-worth and self-esteem. And, what about all the contests? According to the Attorney General of the Department of Justice in California, "there is no law that prescribes how a pageant must be managed; the rules are set by each contest promoter." So, Joe Shmoe can create a pageant if he wants to, without following any sort of guidelines. Scams are just one of the many problems with beauty pageant. How young is too young? One woman was seen with an only child and two entry forms. When questioned, she replied, "I am pregnant." Apparently some people think that parading 3 month old babies all over stage helps them become a better person. Right...babies are benefiting from this? Although pageant mommies say, "oh but it's a good...
