For years there have been many arguments regarding the legalization of marijuana and the effects our country would face. Many people's opinions reflect their customary beliefs and values. The outcome of legalizing marijuana would be partially beneficial and harmful. Some people believe that makes it too risky for the government to approve. This essay includes reasons why it marijuana should be legalized and also reasons why it shouldn't.Marijuana also known as the "gateway drug" is composed of dried leaves and flowering tops of the pistillate hemp plant that contains the ingredient THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). The drug was first banned during the 1930's, after rumor had it that the drug was extremely hazardous. Although no one has died from the inhalation of marijuana, there are many dangerous effects associated with its' usage. Many people believe that if marijuana were to be legalized, its users would move on to using more hardcore drugs instead. Others believe that its users would not resort to other drugs as much because now they could legally get their high.Marijuana greatly effects brain, lung, and heart function after chronic use. It impairs motor skills, memory, and manual dexterity. The drug is proved to be addicting after studies concluded that heavy users experienced a decreased appetite, sleep disturbance, weight loss, aggression, irritability, and restlessness, after they stopped using marijuana. THC also disrupts coordination, balance, posture, reaction time. Many car accidents in the United States are associated with marijuana, a result of slow reaction time. Marijuana has many therapeutic purposes, which have been used by physicians for years. It was banned in 1937, under the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 placed marijuana in the most restrictive category of Schedule I, not allowing it to be used in medical practices. Marijuana has been proven effective in reducing intraocular pressure in glaucoma, reducing nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, relaxing AID's patients, controlling spasticity associated with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis, and controlling seizures. People all over the country make donations and run fund raisers to help support cancer patients. Most of the money raised is spent on researching treatment when I'm sure most of the patients would be alright with just a joint. The NFS could save a fortune every year if it were legal for them to prescribe marijuana in place of other expensive pain killers.Many arguments against the legalization of marijuana include the thought of crime rates increasing, more car accidents, availability to minors, and bodily affects. Many argue that the legalization of marijuana will decrease the crime rate if the drug is readily available, create pacifism, and enhance medications. Many doctors and physicians believe that marijuana could be used to help rehab alcoholics if it were legal. After all, alcohol is this country's problem...
