Imagine yourself locked in a wire cage, slightly bigger than the size of your body. Deprived of life’s gifts, never able to walk or exercise; to love and be loved by someone who cares for you. Instead your life is one of solitude, cramped in a concrete cell with scarcely enough food and water to live on. These atrocious conditions are what dogs in puppy mills endure every day. Puppy mills are large-scale, commercial dog breeding operations, where profit is placed above the welfare of exploited animals. Because of these inhumane conditions, the government must take action now to shutdown puppy mills forever.
Why should puppy mills be outlawed?
Firstly, the dogs are cruelly exploited with the mothers used solely as breeding machines, with half the life expectancy of an average dog. To maximize profits, female dogs are bred at every opportunity with no recovery time between litters. When they are unable to reproduce, the breeding females are often killed. Alarmingly, around 20% of these puppies die according to RSPCA (2017) statistics. Sadly, the parent dogs are unlikely to leave the mill alive. The mother dogs are typically undernourished and receive little or no veterinary care. Their puppies are taken before they are weaned, with some puppies unable to feed, dying of starvation. Once sold, their mothers are left to endure the endless cycle of producing litters in appalling conditions. It is a barbaric industry and the constant suffering of these poor animals must end.
Secondly, the puppies produced are often in poor health with genetic disorders, which combined with inbreeding, produces animals with abnormalities. Illness and disease are commonplace, in the absence of proper husbandry...
