Teen suicide is a tragic event that happens all the time. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death in kids 15-24” (Nami). Teenage years are a hard and trying time for kids. The kids have to deal with all the problems of transitioning into adulthood along with everything else. “On average, adolescents aged 15-19 years have an annual suicide rate of about 1 in 10,000 people” (“adolescent suicide”). Many factors may be the culprit of why teens commit suicide. The three main reasons teens commit suicide is depression, substance abuse, and psychological disorders.

Often once teenagers sober, they feel frequently ashamed and surprised that he/she would even consider ending their life. “In order to forestall teen suicide stemming from teen drug abuse, it is important to recognize the symptoms of teen drug abuse” (“Teen Suicide”). Some of these symptoms include having new friends, being more secretive, grades dropping, not caring in appearance or hygiene, and not being interested in extracurricular activities anymore.
The last major cause of teen suicide is psychological disorders. Teenagers with a mental illness are more likely to commit suicide. Teens need effective medical treatment to help with mental illnesses and prevent suicide attempts. Some of these psychological disorders include bipolar, psychosis, and schizophrenia. Certain psychological disorders can be hereditary. Teens with these disorders often hear violent voices commanding them to do self-destruction. “The worldwide incidence of schizophrenia is 1 percent and often strikes otherwise healthy, high-performing individuals, whose lives are manageable with medication, never fulfill their original promise” (Lickerman). Schizophrenia and psychosis are very serious psychological disorders. “Untreated or poorly treated psychosis almost always requires hospital admission to a locked ward until the voices lose their commanding power” (Lickerman). Mental illness can happen to anybody regardless of age, race, etc. Mental illnesses will only get worse if left untreated.
