Animal experimentation has played a critical role in every medical breakthrough because it has improved the understanding of how humans will respond to a treatment. Due to these studies, scientists have found the cures for diseases that could have killed many lives. Animal experimentation is ethical because it creates vaccines, veterinary medicine, and animals are treated ethically. Throughout the years there has been more people that are for animal experimentation such as in the article "Mounting Opposition to Vivisection" "shows the first national survey that was conducted in 1948 by the national opinion research center, and showed 84 percent of the public supported the use of animals in experiments, while 8 percent oppose it."
First of all, animal experimentation tests the safety of vaccines. The majority of Research labs only use mice and rats to test out the vaccines. Without testing these vaccines many lives would have been lost due to an imperfect vaccine. For example, in the 90s there was a disease called brucellosis that cause abortions and often sterility to humans. The cause of this disease is from the consumption of unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses made from the milk of infected animals. Due to this cause farmers have lost over $100 million dollars. Scientists have made antibiotics which have saved many lives from this deadly disease. . In the article “Mounting Opposition to Vivisection” it says that “Many argue about the potential benefits to human health justifies the harm cause to the animals, and the existing laws and guideline adequately regulate the practice.”(Justin, Borch, and Cherry)
Second of all, veterinary medicine helps to create medicine for animals. Veterinary medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, disorder and injury in animals. For example, vegetarians created a medicine that prevents heartworm infestation that is called diethylcarbamazine; it kills the heartworm larvae by paralyzing their nervous systems.
