With reference to relevant literature, discuss the notion that a career in the international hospitality and tourism industry is not a good idea.The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the largest employers in the United Kingdom and many other developed and less developed countries. Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors within the global economy with a growing presence in virtually every country. The World Tourism Organization maintains that it is now the world's largest industry with over 1 billion international arrivals predicted by 2010. The growth of international tourism in the latter half of the twentieth century has been a major social and economic revolution which has impacted all countries and regions.(http://www.strath.ac.uk/shs/prospective/undergrad/tourism.html)The hospitality industry alone is a multi-billion dollar, growing enterprise and offers unlimited job opportunities. The industry is diverse enough for people to work in different areas of interest and still be employed within the same industry. It has some of the widest varieties of jobs available of any industry. For many people the thought of a career in the hospitality, leisure and tourism brings up images of chefs, fitness instructors and overseas reps and nothing else! Well of course, these are all careers that fall within these sectors, but there is so much more to consider. The hospitality industry alone employs 1 in every 10 people in UK, that's over 2.5 million people. Also according to the British Hospitality Association, 1 in every 5 new jobs fall into this sector with another 40,000 new jobs created by 2006.(http://www.ca.courses-careers.com/hospitality2.htm)The WTO estimated that tourism employed about 212 million people, making it the world's largest employer. Besides generating millions of jobs worldwide, the tourism industry in 1994 had a payroll of US$ 1.7 trillion, or 10.3% of employee wages and salaries. The total employment in India due to tourism is estimated to be 25 million representing 6% of India's work force.
